On March 9th, 2018, Urban Mentor founder, Leonitha Francis was able to share as a Practitioner presenter for the Washington Area Women's Foundation's GirlsLEAD DC Summit. Held on the campus of the University of D.C., the Summit attracted approximately 300 girls from the District.
Urban Mentor shared a presentation for a class of practitioners on the importance of mentorship amongst girls of color in urban communities. We led the workshop in a deep examination of the mentors we had in our own lives, both knowingly and unknowingly. We provided self assessments for the capacity of mentorship as well as a profiling activity that opened our awareness to the implicit biases we subconsciously have as it relates to receiving and reaching young girls of color. We want to extend our gratitude and thanks to Dr. Nicole C. Mason for the opportunity to share in this awesome initiative.
